Novak Djokovic reveals what he told Valentin Vacherot at the net after losing to him in the Shanghai semifinals

Valentin Vacherot made history in Shanghai after defeating Novak Djokovic in the semifinals.

Vacherot beat Djokovic in straight sets to become the lowest-ranked player ever to reach the final of an ATP Masters 1000 tournament.

The world number 204 won 6-3, 6-4 against the Serb, who was in visible discomfort throughout the match, hobbling and grimacing between points.

Djokovic took an extended timeout towards the end of the first set and called the physio, requiring medical treatment on his back.

He ultimately carried on, but could not find a way back into the bout after Vacherot took the first set.

Despite the loss, Djokovic had high praise for the Monegasque star, who will enter the ATP top 60 following the conclusion of the event.

“I want to congratulate Valentin for reaching his first Masters final,” said the 24-time major champion in his post-match press conference. “Going from qualifications, it’s an amazing story.

“I told him at the net that he’s had an amazing tournament, but more so, his attitude is very good, and his game was amazing as well.

“So it’s all about him. I wish him all the best in the finals, and the better player won today.”

Valentin Vacherot’s route to the final of the Shanghai Masters

Vacherot has enjoyed an incredible campaign in Shanghai, having booked his place in the main draw after winning both of his qualifying matches.

He triumphed over Laslo Djere in round one, and in the second round, he knocked out 14th seed Alexander Bublik.

Then, Vacherot earned three statement victories against Tomas Machac, Tallon Griekspoor and Holger Rune to set up the semifinal clash with Djokovic.

Though his final four opponent was suffering physically, the 26-year-old has still achieved a remarkable feat in his win against the legend.
