Howard Webb makes eye-opening admission involving Everton, he hates to admit it

Everton have had their fair share of run-ins with VAR over the years, but it’s a refereeing decision that Howard Webb has owned up to recently.

Everton don’t have the best of relationships with VAR and referees after a Newcastle incident that caused some controversy at Goodison Park.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin couldn’t believe his eyes as Craig Pawson decided not to award the Englishman a penalty for an apparent foul made by Dan Burn.

Howard Webb spoke on TV about the incident and stated that VAR got it right.

In the end, the decision to not give the penalty may have cost Everton three points, as the game ended 0-0.

Now, Webb has come out and admitted to making questionable decisions that impacted Everton.

Howard Webb makes eye-opening admission on Everton and Bolton

Howard Webb’s role at the PGMOL doesn’t allow him to referee, and that might be for the best after an admission he made on Everton recently.

Interestingly, when speaking on the Overlap, Webb recalled a game between Everton and Bolton Wanderers, where he made an error to award the Toffees a penalty involving Leon Osman.

Here’s what he had to say.

“I I had a really really tough game in my second season. I only did eight games in my first year in the Premier League. I refereed Everton vs Bolton in my second season and got taken to the cleaners that day by some really big characters. People like Duncan Ferguson and Tommy Gravesen, and David Weir.

“I started refereeing the game okay the first 20 minutes. I’m giving decisions, but the atmosphere was really toxic in the stadium, and maybe I missed a couple of things I don’t know or gave a couple of fouls that might have been seen as soft, but you know, 20 minutes in it’s really getting on top of me.

“And I started to sort of like hide after that because I started to let things go a little bit. My threshold for giving a foul sort like went too high because time I was blowing, I was getting loads of negative feedback, so I kind of like started to bottle it a little bit in that moment, which I hate to say.

“But you know, I was a pretty new inexperienced Premier League ref with some really experienced players.

“Gary Speed said to me about 40 minutes in, he said you’re starting to let us down he said you’re not doing your job. But he was spot on. I mean he was absolutely right.”

Not the best admission from Howard Webb

The fact that Howard Webb is coming out and stating that he bottled some decisions because the atmosphere influenced him really is worrying.

Any decision made on a football field should be 100% focused on the incident you’re judging, not whether there is outside noise or other variables.

This is the reason many fans point fingers at some decisions going in favour of big clubs, because referees may appear scared of going against a big crowd.
