Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina has announced that a Russian attack has hit the padel club she owns in Kyiv.

“As of today, 776 Ukrainian athletes and sports officials have been killed as a result of Russian aggression,” Svitolina said on Instagram.

“942 sports facilities across Ukraine have been damaged or completely destroyed. Today, my club, SVITO Padel Club, became one of them.

“Ukrainian athletes and our young generation do not have the opportunity to train and prepare for international competitions on equal terms with athletes from other countries.

“With this message, I want to reach out to our international partners and friends who support and cheer for us, Ukrainian athletes, on the international stage, and ask for your support and concrete actions that can help stop the aggressor.”

Linda Noskova plans to drown her sorrows and enjoy New York after the Wimbledon champion came agonisingly close to a stunning upset against world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the US Open quarter-finals.

The Czech led by a break in the deciding set and held an advantage in the final tiebreak before eventually falling 7-6(1) 3-6 7-6(10-7) to the two-time defending champion in a gruelling three-hour battle at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Rather than mope about the defeat, the 21-year-old has decided to make the most of the Big Apple before heading home.

“I’m going to stay for, like, three more days. I’m going to get drunk and forget about this, I guess,” Noskova told reporters with a laugh.

“I’m old enough to do that, thankfully. I love New York. I have so many places I want to go. I have a lot of great friends here. They will show me around and, you know, I will forget about it hopefully in the next couple of hours.”

There was plenty worth forgetting after Noskova repeatedly pushed top seed Sabalenka to the limit, only to watch the Belarusian fight back in the third set and prevail in the tiebreak.

Alex Michelsen has stemmed the bleeding. From 3-0 down, Tiafoe dragged it back to 3-3 and looked for a moment like his run was going to continue and go up a break up before Michelsen dug deep and found the hold.

This is still the second afternoon match on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Anyone with a ticket to the night session might want to bring some energy drinks or something – it’s already 6.35pm in New York and when this match finishes, they’ll have to clear out the stadium and get the night fans in.

The night session later on is Jessica Pegula v Emma Navarro followed by Ben Shelton v Carlos Alcaraz.

Both of those have the potential go to the distance too, especially if Shelton brings his best.

We’re on the verge of an upset here – Michelsen is now 3-0 up in this deciding fifth set.

And in the next game, Foe was 15-30 down and facing the possibility of going a double break down.

Jim Courier in commentary said it was "a crisis moment", but thankfully for him he was able to shake it off and get through it to hold.

We're closing in on four hours in this match.

And now Tiafoe has the break back!

“He’s hanging in there with everything he’s got now,” Nick Lester said in commentary.

American young gun Alex Michelsen was on the verge of upsetting countryman Frances Tiafoe in the quarter finals.

The 22-year-old was absolutely cruising, winning the first two sets with relative ease and then only narrowly losing the third 7-5 to the more experienced Tiafoe.

But Michelsen is starting to melt down after being broken early in the fourth set.

During his service game he turns around and sprays a fan sitting behind him.

A couple of points later he is throwing his racquet on the ground and yelling at his box.

“First real visible signs of irritation from Michelsen,” Jim Courier says on the broadcast.

“He has been pretty buttoned up, with only positive emotion coming out of him, until now.”

This would be a stunning comeback from No.11 seed Tiafoe if he can pull off victory.

Aryna Sabalenka had to win two tiebreaks, and come back rom losing the second set to book her place in the semi finals.

She beat Linda Noskova in three sets this morning to progress.

She is the two-time defending women’s champ at Flushing Meadows.

“What a battle. What an incredible player she is and I’m speechless right now because I was pushing myself to the limit in this match, especially in the third set,” Sabalenka said.

“I honestly thought that that’s it, the match is over and probably that’s what helped me to kind of like, I don’t know, feel loose and just go after my shots.”

Sabalenka finished off the match with a second-serve ace to turn back the Wimbledon champion and reach the semi finals in Flushing Meadows for the sixth straight year.
