Yulia Starodubtseva staged a comeback at the U.S. Open and advanced to the third round

Ukrainian tennis player Yulia Starodubtseva advanced to the third round of the U.S. Open. In the second round, she pulled off a come-from-behind victory over Greece’s Maria Sakkari, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. The match lasted 2 hours and 44 minutes.

The match took place on September 3 in New York. Starodubtseva got off to a rough start and lost the first set 1-6.

In the second set, the situation changed dramatically. Sakkari had three match points at 5-4, but the Ukrainian managed to save them, forced a tiebreak, and won it 7-4.

In the decisive third set, Starodubtseva completely seized the initiative and closed out the match with a 6–2 victory.

During the match, the Ukrainian committed three double faults, converted four of nine break points, and did not record a single ace. Her opponent recorded seven aces.

The Ukrainian tennis player’s next opponent will be world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan. Rybakina also successfully advanced past the second round of the US Open, defeating Jessica Bousas Maneiro of Spain 6–2, 6–4.

For Starodubtseva, this is her third appearance in the main draw of the US Open and her first time advancing to the third round of this tournament. Overall, this marks the third time in her career that the Ukrainian has reached the round of 32 at a Grand Slam tournament.

The 2026 US Open in New York will run through September 13.

Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz and Belarus’s Arina Sabalenka, the defending US Open champions, advanced to the third round of the tournament in New York. Alcaraz defeated Portugal’s Jaime Faria in the second round with a score of 4–6, 6–0, 6–3, 6–2, while Sabalenka crushed Russian qualifier Polina Yatsenko 6–1, 6–1.

Alex de Minaur was eliminated from the US Open in the second round. The Australian tennis player lost to Botic van de Zandschulp of the Netherlands in three sets.
