McGuinness to stay in Donegal hot seat for 2027

Jim McGuinness will remain in the Donegal hot seat for 2027 after being reappointed as manager of the county's senior footballers on Monday night.

McGuinness returned to inter-county management in 2023 on a three-year term, with the option for a fourth year.

The county board has now confirmed he will be staying for another campaign, releasing a short statement that read: "Following a meeting of the County Committee, CLG Dhún na nGall confirm the appointment of Michael McCann as senior hurling manager for a two-year term and Jim McGuinness as senior football manager for a one-year term."

McCann is heading into his 10th season in charge of the hurlers. He is the second longest serving manager in inter-county hurling, behind only Limerick's John Kiely.

McGuinness famously guided Donegal to an All-Ireland SFC title in 2012. He also won Ulster crowns in 2011, 2012 and 2014 during his first term.

In his second spell, McGuinness has claimed two more Ulster championship victories, in 2024 and 2025, when he also steered the county to an All-Ireland final, which they lost to Kerry.

This summer, Dublin ended their quest for Sam Maguire in Round 3 of the All-Ireland SFC. Earlier in the year they were beaten by Down in the Ulster SFC quarter-finals.
