Now it’s Shelton who is pressured on his serve, making back-to-back unforced errors from 15-all to go double break point down. He saves the first with another wild exchange of volleys at the net, but blinks on the second with a backhand error to end an eight-shot rally. “Olé, olé, olé” chants ring down from the loge seats in Ashe as the crowd tries to will Alcaraz on.

For anybody wondering, the latest finish in US Open history is 2.50am, set by Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner in their 2022 quarter-final. Alcaraz won 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-7 (0), 7-5, 6-3 after 5hr 15min.

Here’s a glimpse of the US Open grounds at 1.40am, with Shelton and Alcaraz still going inside Arthur Ashe Stadium. Fountain Plaza, normally one of the busiest thoroughfares at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, is almost completely deserted, the concessions shuttered and only a handful of people still milling around.

Shelton wins third set, 6-3!

Third set: Shelton 6-7, 6-1, 6-3 Alcaraz

At 15-all, Shelton pounds a 124mph serve before coming to net and finishing with a muscular forehand winner. He’s two points from the set. Alcaraz answers with a sharply angled backhand winner from the baseline for 30-all. Then, another truly extraordinary point ends after a trade of apparent volley winners, when Alcaraz hits a blistering forehand winner moving into the backcourt for break point at 30-40. A massive point, this. And Shelton gets the better of Alcaraz over a 19-shot rally to save it, bringing the crowd to its feet once again! Deuce. Shelton then outlasts Alcaraz in an 11-shot exchange for set point and the Spaniard looks worse for wear, having been run ragged in these extended rallies. And Shelton forces Alcaraz into another forced error to take the third set in 48 minutes!

Unlike the second-set blowout, this was a much sterner test. The American protected his serve superbly, saving all three break points he faced in the set and losing only seven points on serve altogether. Through three sets he has saved six of seven break points and held in 13 of 14 service games.

The serve remains terrifying – still topping out at 149mph – but Shelton has been winning this match with more than raw velocity. He’s getting 66% of his first serves in and has won 68% of those points, while an extraordinary 39% of his second serves have gone unreturned.

Shelton saves them both for deuce, then uncorks a 142mph ace that draws more audible oohs for game point. But Alcaraz follows by winning the new point of the night – new point of the tournament? – winning a sensational 18-point exhange with a backhand volley winner that brings the reamining crowd of several thousand fans to its feet. Deuce, then two quick points for Shelton to back up the break. That’s nine straight games to the American.

Shelton wins second set, 6-1!

Alcaraz falls behind 15-30, then 30-40, and Shelton has a set point. And the Spaniard double-faults! Shelton has taken the second set in 49 minutes and we’re level at one set apiece as the clock creeps toward 1am inside Arthur Ashe Stadium!

The biggest change from the first set to the second was Shelton’s return. He was especially ruthless whenever Alcaraz missed his first serve, winning 18 of 32 points against the Spaniard’s second delivery across the first two sets. Meanwhile his own second serve remained remarkably sturdy: Shelton won 70% of those points, compared with 44% for Alcaraz.

And Alcaraz helped him along. The Spaniard’s error count ballooned as the set got away from him: through two sets he had committed 32 unforced errors to Shelton’s 13.

Alcaraz then nets a backhand for deuce, followed by an Alcaraz double fault that gives Shelton a break-point chance. Alcaraz saves it in style hitting multiple winners over a nine-shot rally before finally nailing it down with a sharply angled backhand volley winner. Then Alcaraz misses on an overhand forehand, giving Shelton another break point. And this time Shelton converts it when Alcaraz sends a forehand long early in the rally.

Shelton is forced into a forehand error, giving the Spaniard a break-point look. He saves it, but moments later Alcaraz has another. Shelton then wins an aggressive serve-and-volley point to save that one, too. Shelton then mixes in a double fault, only his first of the night, to give Alcaraz a third break point ... and serves himself out of trouble with a 142mph ace. From there Shelton holds, surviving a grueling 16-point marathon.

Hope for Shelton right out of the gate as Alcaraz goes behind love-15, then 15-40 on his serve. Two break-point chances and the Spaniard saves them both for deuce. Shelton then rips a forehand winner for a third break point but Alcaraz saves it with a forehand winner of his own. A second deuce. Then a third. Alcaraz then mishits a forehand to give Shelton a fourth break point before saving it with a highlight-reel backhand winner on the pass. He holds from there, closing it out with a 117mph ace down the middle. That’s a brutal sequence of missed opportunities for Shelton going back to early in the first-set tiebreaker.

Alcaraz wins first set, 7-6 (5)!

First set tiebreak: Shelton 5-7 Alcaraz

Alcaraz appears to have rediscovered his forehand, ripping a pair of searing winners off that side for a set point. Shelton serves wide and another sensational point ensues, with the American hitting a tweener off an Alcaraz lob while in full retreat to keep the point alive, before ultimately dumping a forehand into the net to let the opening set slip away 61 minutes.

A tough pill to swallow for Shelton but there was precious little between them. Shelton’s serve was every bit the weapon advertised – topping out at a blistering 149mph – and the American repeatedly came forward behind it, winning eight of nine points at the net and six of seven when serving and volleying.

But Alcaraz was far more effective once he got Shelton’s first serve back in play, winning 12 of 23 return points against it, while Shelton managed only eight of 26 against the Spaniard’s first delivery.

Just when it seems like the first set is a fait accompli, Alcaraz mixes in a couple of unforced errors for love-30. He recovers with a forehand winner for 15-30, but Alcaraz then sails a forehand far past the baseline for 15-40. It’s Shelton’s first break-point chance of the match and he’s got two of them. And he converts the first when Alcaraz overcooks another forehand badly! We’re headed to a tiebreak.

A tightly wound opening set is in danger of going sideways for Shelton in the blink of an eye. He quickly goes down love-40 on his serve, giving Alcaraz three chances at a break point. Here is probably the clearest measure of the task facing Shelton tonight: he is 0-17 against top-three opponents. His overall record against the top five is 4-21, with wins over Casper Ruud, Jannik Sinner, Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz – but never anyone ranked in the top three. Alcaraz, currently world No 3, would therefore represent the biggest win of his career.

What’s more, Alcaraz has never lost to an American at a grand slam: 13 wins from 13 matches. That includes his five-set victories over Frances Tiafoe at this tournament in 2022 and Wimbledon two years later, as well as his four-set win over Shelton at Roland Garros last year.

Preamble

Good evening from Arthur Ashe Stadium, where Carlos Alcaraz and Ben Shelton are set to close out Tuesday’s US Open night session with a peach of a quarter-final.

Alcaraz is the defending champion, the No 2 seed and increasingly looks as though his four-and-a-half-month absence with a wrist injury never happened. He enters tonight on an 18-match winning streak at grand-slam level, having won last year’s US Open and this year’s Australian Open, and is now an eye-popping 31-1 at the majors since the start of the 2025 French Open.

The numbers in New York are similarly formidable. Alcaraz owns a 28-3 career record at the US Open, a .903 winning percentage that is the best by any man in the Open era, better than Pete Sampras, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. He has reached at least the quarter-finals in five of his six appearances here, winning the title in 2022 and again last year.

But Shelton is no doormat. The 23-year-old American is 12-2 on hard courts this summer and won his second Masters 1000 title last month in Montreal without dropping a set. He has already taken out Hubert Hurkacz, Denis Shapovalov and Stefanos Tsitsipas during this run, brushing aside the latter in straight sets on Sunday to reach his third major quarter-final.

There is one glaring hole on Shelton’s résumé. He is 0-17 against top-three opponents and has lost all three previous meetings with Alcaraz. Their most recent encounter, at Roland Garros last year, was at least competitive: the Spaniard won 7-6 (8), 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

And tonight the American has something those previous meetings lacked: Arthur Ashe Stadium in full throat. Shelton first announced himself here with his semi-final run three years ago and will be trying to become only the second American man in the past 20 years to beat a top-three opponent at the US Open.

Frances Tiafoe is already waiting in the last four on Friday after his extraordinary comeback against Alex Michelsen earlier today. Will it be two US players in a row on Alcaraz’s second-week menu, or will Shelton ensure an all-American semi-final in the bottom half of the draw?

Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro are currently late in the third set of their quarter-final match on Ashe. Once they finish it should be about 20 minutes before Shelton and Alcaraz take the court.
