Premier League legend reveals what Arsenal have missed for years

Arsenal have added a “horrible side” to their game, which could make the difference in the Premier League title race, according to Dion Dublin.

The Gunners came from behind to beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday and continue their unbeaten start to the season. Mikel Arteta’s side sit third in the Premier League table after seven games, level on points with defending champions Manchester City and one point behind leaders Liverpool.

Bukayo Saka was the star of the show at the Emirates Stadium, assisting Kai Havertz and Gabriel Martinelli before wrapping up the three points with a late goal of his own. His brilliance was needed after Cameron Archer gave Saints a surprise lead on the counter-attack.

Arteta was delighted with the mentality of his side, who continued their momentum after beating Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday. Former Premier League striker Dublin spotted a change in the Gunners while watching the match.

Speaking on BBC programme Final Score, he said: “Arsenal have got something new which I haven't seen in many years. This horrible side, the grit and determination – they're all happy to do it and they'll muck in. They have the heart this time and they are hurting from the last couple of years.”

Arsenal have come up marginally short in the past two seasons, finishing second behind City, who have won the last four Premier League titles and six of the last seven. The Gunners drew 2-2 with City a few weeks ago, despite playing the second half with 10 men and Saka is convinced this will be their year.

Asked by Arsenal legend Thierry Henry on CBS Sports after the PSG win if this could be their year, Saka replied: "I don't want to put too much pressure on us but I do think this is the year. I think we've been close the last two years and yeah, we're getting closer. But yeah, this hopefully will be the year."

Arteta was happy with the way his side reacted to the Saints opener. “The first half was exceptional with the dominance we had, the areas we played in, the amount of situations and chances we created in open play, set-pieces and with our counter-press,” he said. “We did really well there. It’s unbelievable that we didn’t score a goal. Then we started the second half a bit sloppy, especially in the first five-10 minutes with the ball.

“Then the game became a bit more open and they scored. Again, we threw away everything we did in the first half and started a completely brand new game in a difficult context. The team reacted incredibly well. A lot of composure, big belief and very good clarity in what we had to do.”
