Italy’s World Cup exit after Bosnia loss and Gennaro Gattuso resignation shocks fans

Italy’s exit came after a dramatic match against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The game ended 1-1 after extra time, but things went wrong in the penalty shootout, where Italy lost 4-1. A red card to Alessandro Bastoni in the first half made things even harder for the team. This defeat meant Italy would miss another World Cup, something that has now happened three times in a row. It is a huge fall for a team with such a strong football history. Soon after the match, Gennaro Gattuso stepped down as manager. Federation president Gabriele Gravina and team legend Gianluigi Buffon also resigned from their roles. The mood around Italian football quickly turned heavy, with fans disappointed and searching for answers.

At the same time, in Toronto, Canada Soccer saw a chance to bring energy to their own team. They set up a jersey swap event outside Cafe Diplomatico on College Street. Fans were invited to bring their Italy shirts and receive a Canada jersey for free. The organization said: “Canada Soccer is inviting Italian-Canadians to get behind the home team. On Saturday 4 April from 10am to 2pm (EST), Canada Soccer will be outside Cafe Diplomatico on College Street in Toronto, offering fans the chance to swap their Italy colours for a Canada jersey and join the momentum heading into the FIFA World Cup 2026.” They added: “Cost: Free. Bring your Italian jersey, leave with a Canadian one. Available while supplies last, fans are encouraged to arrive early to be kitted out.” The video showed fans standing in long lines, with a truck nearby carrying the message: “We want your passion. This time, throw on the red.” Interestingly, fans were not required to give away their Italy shirts. The goal was simply to hand out Canada kits and build excitement. Canada, led by coach Jesse Marsch, has already qualified as one of the host nations along with the United States and Mexico. They will open their campaign against Bosnia on June 12, followed by matches against Qatar and Switzerland.
