The hosts have struggled to compete on the international stage, with their last major tournament appearance coming at Euro 2016.

Ireland have also failed to feature at a World Cup since 2002 and their clash against England was their first under new boss Heimir Hallgrimsson following John O'Shea's spell in interim charge.

Keane spoke about Ireland and the FAI's recent problems ahead of the match for ITV, saying: "The last few years there's been a lot of problems with lack of quality."

However, he then appeared to have a slight slip of the tongue when commenting on their decision-making.

"There's a lot of good people in the FAI but the people who are making the decisions probably couldn't organise a p*** up in a brewery, honestly."

Co-pundit Ian Wright quickly let out a chuckle, with presenter Mark Pougatch jokingly adding: "That's one way of putting it!"

The action in Dublin eventually commenced, although a YouTube prankster gatecrashed the England team when they lined up on the pitch.

England's national anthem was then booed by Ireland fans, with interim boss Lee Carsley not singing it as expected despite the controversy over his decision.

Carsley, who was managing the senior side for the first time, saw his Three Lions face a spirited start from the hosts.

But England's were quick to showcase their quality as they opened the scoring on 11 minutes.

Former Ireland international Declan Rice made the most of a loose ball inside the box by firing into the top-right corner of Caoimhin Kelleher's net.

His celebration was calm though, with the midfielder holding his hands up to seemingly show respect to his ex-international side.

Rice then assisted former Ireland youth player Jack Grealish just before the half-hour mark as England took control of the match.

Grealish celebrated more animatedly as he jumped and fist-pumped in front of the travelling Three Lions fans in the away end.

England's win has taken them top of League B Group 2 and they next face Finland at Wembley on Tuesday, live on talkSPORT.
