How many Man Utd players who played under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer are still part of the first team

Manchester United have been subjected to lots of changes since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer departed in 2021, although the results have worsened.

Since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s dismissal at Old Trafford in November 2021, Manchester United have had four different managers standing in the dugout, including two on an interim basis.

Perhaps the biggest change since then has come at the very top, with Sir Jim Ratcliffe becoming co-owner in 2024 and putting Ineos in charge of football operations at the club.

Moreover, United’s first team squad looks very different from Solskjaer’s reign, as Ruben Amorim now attempts to build a team capable of bringing success back to Old Trafford.

The start to the 2025/26 season has not gone to plan for United, while Solskjaer has been sacked at Besiktas.

Solskjaer spent almost three years as United manager.

The 52-year-old Norwegian is currently without a club after he was sacked by Besiktas following a shock defeat in the Europa Conference League play-offs.

Looking at Amorim’s current squad, five players remain who played under Solskjaer – excluding Tom Heaton, who didn’t make a competitive appearance under the manager who brought him back to the club.

This list could be shortened by the time the transfer deadline shuts on Monday, with Sancho deemed an outcast after being told to train away from Amorim’s squad along with Antony and Tyrell Malacia, who both joined United when Erik ten Hag was in charge.

Maguire and Shaw have both reached their 30s since Solskjaer’s departure, but Amorim is now looking to use their experience to his benefit in United’s defence.

Finally, Portuguese duo Dalot and Fernandes are regulars under Amorim. The latter was named club captain by Ten Hag in July 2023.

Solskjaer’s biggest achievements as Man Utd boss

In his two full seasons in charge, Solskjaer guided United to two top-three Premier League finishes.

The strongest league finish saw the Red Devils finish runners-up to Pep Guardiola’s Man City in 2021.

Furthermore, in 2021, United reached the Europa League final before suffering a disappointing defeat against Villarreal on penalties.

That was Solskjaer’s golden chance to win a trophy as United manager, as he would be sacked the following season following a run of poor results.
